Iospan Wireless And Powerwave Technologies To Accelerate The Deployment Of MIMO-OFDM Broadband Fixed Wireless Access Technology
SAN JOSE, Calif. - Aug. 06, 2001 -
Iospan Wireless, Inc., the leader in fixed wireless broadband multiple
antenna technology, and Powerwave Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: PWAV), a
leading supplier of high-performance radio-frequency power amplifiers
for use in wireless telecommunications networks, today announced they
have entered into a memorandum of agreement for the joint development of
AirBurstTM-compatible broadband power amplifiers that will further
optimize the performance of Iospan's MIMO-OFDM-enabled AirBurst
technology.
"We are extremely excited about the opportunity to
enhance our AirBurst technology with Powerwave's high-performance
broadband RF power amplifiers," said Levent Gun, Iospan Wireless'
president and CEO. "This agreement will allow service providers to move
forward aggressively with the self-install, indoor CPE service model,
while keeping infrastructure costs in check. "
Today's fixed
wireless service providers are demanding that next-generation fixed
wireless solutions enable the deployment of Non-LOS, reliable, scalable,
easy-to-install and profitable broadband access systems. Iospan's
AirBurst technology is designed to allow service providers to quickly
deploy broadband wireless services for both residential and business
applications that will successfully compete with existing broadband
technologies on both price and performance.
"Powerwave and
Iospan share a vision of enabling the delivery of a market driven
broadband wireless solution," said Bruce C. Edwards, president and CEO
of Powerwave. "This agreement allows Iospan to streamline development
efforts by providing them with access to our next generation amplifier
solutions, technical expertise and cost-effective, high-volume
manufacturing capabilities."
As part of the agreement, Powerwave
will supply Iospan with high-performance broadband power amplifiers for
use in trials with a major U.S. carrier using Iospan's AirBurst
technology. Tighter coupling of AirBurst and Powerwave's technologies is
aimed at improving system efficiencies and reducing the costs and
footprint of the system.
"As the next-generation of fixed
wireless cellular systems are rolled out that efficiently support
self-installable, indoor CPE, infrastructure costs become a critical
issue for service providers," said Brian Modoff, Senior Analyst at
Deutsche Banc Alex Brown. "The joining of industry leaders, such as
Iospan and Powerwave, will enable the broadband wireless market with
solutions that are competitively priced and meet the demands of the
service providers."
About Iospan Wireless
Iospan Wireless,
Inc., a privately held company located in San Jose, CA, is a leader in
developing, delivering, and enabling innovative digital wireless
communications products and services based on the Company's innovative
MIMO-OFDM-enabled AirBurst technologies. These technologies will enable
mass-deployment of fixed and portable wireless broadband services that
provide wireline-like performance and reliability under pure
Non-Line-of-Sight (Non-LOS) channel conditions. Broadband wireless
access systems using MIMO-OFDM will reduce installation and provisioning
costs, provide faster access speeds than current broadband solutions
and provide ubiquitous service availability. AirBurstâ„¢ chipsets,
reference designs and board-level solutions solve the coverage, capacity
and scalability problems broadband Wireless Internet Service Providers
are facing today, while offering new levels of profitability and faster
time to market.

Forward Looking Statement
The foregoing statements regarding the
development and supply of AirBurstTM compatible power amplifiers,
expected revenues from such amplifiers, and the benefits and market
acceptance of such amplifiers are "forward looking statements." All of
these statements are subject to risks and uncertainties which could
cause actual results to differ materially from those projected or
implied. Such potential risks and uncertainties include, but are not
limited to, in no particular order: The amplifiers are in the prototype
design phase and Powerwave has no expectation of revenue from such
amplifiers in the near term; the joint development of the amplifiers is
subject to the execution of a definitive agreement between Powerwave and
Iospan; the inability of the parties to agree upon a mutually
acceptable definitive agreement; unexpected technical difficulties in
developing and productizing the amplifiers for volume production; lack
of market acceptance of the amplifiers; difficulties in integrating the
amplifiers with AirBurst enabled base stations; and the ramp up of
production of the amplifiers may take longer than planned.
More detailed
information on these and additional factors which could affect
Powerwave's operating and financial results are described in Powerwave's
Form 10-K for the fiscal year ended December 31, 2000 and its Form 10-Q
for the quarterly period ended April 1, 2001 both of which are filed
with the Securities and Exchange Commission, and other risks detailed
from time to time in Powerwave's reports filed with the Securities and
Exchange Commission. Powerwave urges all interested parties to read
these reports to gain a better understanding of the many business and
other risks that it faces. Additionally, Powerwave undertakes no
obligation to publicly release the results of any revisions to these
forward-looking statements which may be made to reflect events or
circumstances occurring after the date hereof or to reflect the
occurrence of unanticipated events.
