Powerwave Affirms Commitment to North American 4G Wireless Network Build Out

Company announces new products, services and support aimed at helping operators reduce costs and complexity, speed rollout, and ensure world-class reliability

Powerwave Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:PWAV), a global leader in end-to-end wireless coverage and capacity solutions, today affirmed its commitment to helping operators in North America deploy the next generation of advanced wireless networks based on 4G technologies.

“Powerwave is uniquely qualified to support customers deploying 4G networks,” said Ronald J. Buschur, president and CEO, Powerwave Technologies. “Our portfolio of 4G infrastructure products, including antennas, TMAs, MCPAs, and radio heads, along with our service and software solutions are designed to reduce deployment costs and complexity, and provide network operators with a time-to-market advantage. Customers benefit from our real-world ‘been there, done that’ WiMAX deployment experience, which greatly reduces the overall risk involved when deploying these highly dynamic and complex next-generation networks.”

Shaping the 4G Landscape with Critical Infrastructure
Powerwave also announced its newest 4G infrastructure offerings, including its new family of 700/800 MHz and 2.5-2.7 GHz antennas, and two new digital remote radio head offerings for WiMAX and LTE.

New 4G antenna family supports 700, 800 MHz and 2.5 GHz
Powerwave’s new family of 4G antennas covers the 698-896 MHz and 2.5-2.7GHz IMT-2000 frequency bands and offers high efficiency, high performance, and low interference to meet the needs of highly dynamic 4G networks. Featuring a compact form factor, and industry-leading gain per length, the new antenna family consists of single-band, quad-port single-band, and multi-band offerings. The antennas support 2x2 MIMO, while the quad-port single-band antenna is ideal for 4x4 MIMO applications, suiting the multi-modal needs of many operators deploying 4G networks.

The antennas offer several key features and functionality, including Powerwave’s integrated remote electrical tilt technology (iRET) which enables operators to cover more area with fewer antennas. This reduces the number of components at the site, eliminating potential added cost for leases. Consistent performance across the frequency band and down tilts is ensured via Powerwave’s Aperture Coupled Patch technology. Additionally, the antennas feature superior upper side lobe suppression, which reduces site-to-site interference.

“Our new 4G antennas are based on Powerwave’s proven antenna technology that’s field tested and ultra reliable,” said Buschur. “This is supported by the fact that we have more than one million antennas deployed around the world, and one of the highest reputations for quality in the industry.”

WiMAX digital remote radio head
Powerwave is also showcasing its WiMAX remote radio head, optimized for use in 2.5 GHz–2.7 GHz frequency bands. Featuring a small, lightweight form factor, Powerwave’s WiMAX remote radio head can be physically mated to a base-band subassembly to form a tower-mounted macro base station that supports up to three WiMAX carriers.

The remote radio head is highly configurable via firmware, providing ease of customization and time-to-market advantage. Powerwave’s WiMAX digital remote radio head supports two transmit and two receive channels (2x2 MIMO), and offers 20 MHz instantaneous bandwidth. The product also mitigates challenges surrounding interference with neighboring sites, offering high interference rejection per FCC requirements (67 + 10logP).

LTE digital remote radio head
Supporting operation over planned 3GPP Long Term Evolution (LTE) networks, Powerwave’s LTE remote radio head is a totally integrated radio that can be tower- or rooftop- mounted.

Offering superior flexibility and investment protection, Powerwave’s LTE digital remote radio head enables operators to support their current operations as well as future expansion to deliver new LTE services. Powerwave LTE products will include 700, 900, 2100 MHz and 2.5-2.7 GHz frequency bands.

Due to its digital design, the LTE remote radio head is highly configurable via firmware changes to meet the needs of different applications; this translates into benefits including ease-of-deployment and fast time-to-market.

The build out of 4G (WiMAX and LTE) base stations using a distributed remote radio head approach allows the radio to be located alongside the antennas, eliminating energy/power losses associated with long cable runs by replacing them with optical fibre data interfaces. This architecture, in combination with Powerwave’s highly efficient digital-to-RF conversion and amplification, reduces CAPEX and OPEX of the overall system, as well as maintenance costs.

The unique design and higher power efficiency of Powerwave’s remote radio heads results in lower power consumption; use of a multi-carrier remote radio head also improves energy efficiency. All combined, the overall effect is less environmental impact via reduction in both the carbon and physical footprint of the base station. The remote radio heads can also be used in conjunction with Powerwave’s digital repeater family to support indoor 4G networks.

“Powerwave’s new WiMAX and LTE remote radio heads leverage our award-winning technology architecture first developed for our WiMAX digital radio head,” said Buschur. “All total, we’ve fielded nearly 50,000 digital radio heads around the globe, supporting all manner of air interfaces and technologies.”

Industry Association and Advocacy
Powerwave is also affirming its commitment to the advancement of 4G technology through industry association and advocacy. The company recently signed on as a sponsor member of the NGMN (Next Generation Mobile Networks) (http://www.ngmn.org/), an initiative by a worldwide group of leading mobile operators to provide a coherent vision for the mobile network technology evolution beyond 3G for the competitive delivery of mobile broadband wireless services and LTE.

Additionally, Powerwave is a principal member of the WiMAX Forum (http://www.wimaxforum.org/).

“Organizations such as NGMN and the WiMAX Forum are tremendous catalysts in driving continued advancement, innovation and technical excellence in the 4G wireless arena,” said Buschur. “We’re very fortunate to have Khurram P. Sheikh, our chief product and development officer – a pioneer of various industry and technology standards bodies and one of the original members of the WiMAX Forum – driving Powerwave’s industry advocacy efforts and development.”
