Powerwave Introduces 700 MHz Single-and Dual-Band Antennas for 4G Networks
Designed to support fast and efficient roll out of 700 MHz LTE services, the antennas offer high efficiency, low interference and industry-leading gain per length
CTIA WIRELESS 2009, LAS VEGAS, Booth #6002 - Apr. 01, 2009 -
Demonstrating its commitment to streamline deployment of next-generation 4G networks, Powerwave Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:PWAV), a global leader in end-to-end wireless coverage and capacity solutions, today introduced its 700 MHz antenna line to assist operators rolling out 3GPP Long Term Evolution (LTE) services.
Offering high efficiency, low interference, and superior gain per length, Powerwave’s new family of 700/800 MHz wide-band antennas enables Auction 73 winners to quickly and cost-effectively deploy new services leveraging 700 MHz spectrum at existing 800 MHz cell sites without increasing the number of visible antennas. The new antenna family consists of a single-band antenna covering 698-896 MHz bands and a dual-band offering covering both 698-896 MHz and 1710-2170 MHz bands.
The antennas, which comprise a number of new products Powerwave is announcing at CTIA 2009 to streamline the rollout of 4G networks (See news release:http://www.powerwave.com/pr-2009-04-01.asp), are the same size as typical single-band 800 MHz dual polarized antennas. This offers an exceptional time-to-market advantage; in most cases, customers can remove an existing single-band antenna and replace it with Powerwave’s 700/800 MHz wide-band antenna without any change in the appearance of the site, conforming to current lease agreements and zoning restrictions.
Options include fixed electrical tilt support, as well as integrated remote electrical tilt (iRET) functionality under one antenna radome. Powerwave’s iRET capabilities deliver maximum performance and improved aesthetics, and eliminate installation and reliability issues that can occur with typical exterior remote electrical tilt modules.
Further setting Powerwave antennas apart is the product’s ability to provide consistent performance across frequency bands and down tilts via Powerwave’s patented Aperture Coupled Patch technology, ensuring steady performance over the entire band and the elimination of dead zones.
Additionally, the new antennas boast superior upper side lobe suppression for reduced site-to-site interference – a critical requirement for 4G networks. Powerwave’s 700 MHz antenna family also offers high efficiency – as much as one decibel in gain above competing offerings.
“Powerwave’s new 700 MHz antenna family meets the needs of operators seeking high reliability, high performance and the requisite technology innovation to help address key deployment challenges inherent in LTE build outs,” said Khurram P. Sheikh, chief product and development officer, Powerwave Technologies, Inc. “This antenna, part of our new 4G antenna portfolio, supports both 700 MHz and 800 MHz operation – giving operators the flexibility to support a graduated and cost-effective approach to 4G deployment with the added benefit of Powerwave’s renowned reliability.”
Frequently described as “beachfront property” for its ability to penetrate barriers such as walls and buildings – and travel long distances with very little distortion when compared to signals operating over other frequencies – the 700 MHz band represents a new opportunity for wireless carriers and infrastructure providers. The Federal Communication Commission’s 700 MHz spectrum auction brought in more than $19.5 billion in bids – and upon conclusion, spectrum was allocated to a number of major North American operators.
