Powerwave Wins Global Telecoms Business Magazine's 2009 Innovation Award
World’s Largest Indoor Wireless Coverage System at Mecca Recognized for Innovation
SANTA ANA, Calif. - Jun. 17, 2009 -
Powerwave Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:PWAV), a global leader in end-to-end wireless coverage and capacity solutions, today announced it has won a 2009 Innovation Award from Global Telecoms Business magazine for the company’s role in deploying the world’s largest indoor wireless coverage system within the King Abdul Aziz Endowment, considered the largest collection of buildings in the world in the holy city of Mecca, Saudi Arabia.
Each year, Global Telecoms Business honors innovative projects involving telecoms operators and service providers from around the world – projects that will change the industry now and for years to come. Honored in the “Wireless Network Infrastructure Innovation” category, Powerwave accepted the award in conjunction with Mobily Saudi Arabia at the 2009 GTB Innovation Awards dinner held June 16 in London.
“It’s with great pride that we accept this award recognizing extraordinary wireless telecommunications projects around the globe,” said Ronald J. Buschur, president and CEO, Powerwave Technologies. “This particular project was phenomenal on many fronts, and we’re pleased to have played a critical role in delivering state-of-the-art wireless infrastructure.”
In 2008, Powerwave and its Saudi Arabian business partner, Advanced Communications and Electronics Systems Co. Ltd. (ACES), were selected by Mobily Saudi Arabia, the second largest wireless operator in the Middle East, to deploy a wireless coverage system inside four of the seven towers currently comprising the King Abdul Aziz Endowment. The initial phase of this multi-million dollar system deployment also included wireless coverage for the venue’s shopping center featuring 450 shops and restaurants, and six-floor underground parking garage, and supports GSM900, GSM1800 and GSM2100 commercial wireless frequencies. Phase II and Phase III, slated for completion in 2009 and 2010, will bring wireless coverage to four additional buildings, and a skyscraper at the center of the complex.
“The industry is seeing a wave of innovation which is making a huge difference – to the companies working in the industry and to all of us in business and as consumers,” said Alan Burkitt-Gray, editor, Global Telecoms Business. “We were impressed by the quality and number of nominations this year – the most we have ever had – so it was a special triumph to be one of the winners this year. This was an outstanding project and well deserves its award.”
In addition the King Abdul Aziz Endowment, Powerwave has deployed hundreds of indoor and outdoor wireless coverage systems around the world, including deployments for the Olympic Athletic Center of Athens; the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA); the Mandalay Bay Resort & Convention Center in Las Vegas; the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport; the Alberta Children’s Hospital in Calgary, Alberta, Canada; the Moscone Center in San Francisco; and the 55-story high-rise Torre Mayor in Mexico City.
