Mobile Broadband Wireless Technology Critical to Government & Homeland Security
Wireless and Security Experts Discussed the Impact and Potential of Emerging Wireless Broadband Technologies for Government, Military and Public Safety
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Sep. 29, 2010 -
Powerwave Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:PWAV), a global leader in end-to-end wireless coverage and capacity solutions, hosted a Day of Innovation in Technology in Washington D.C. on September 22, 2010 at the Pavilion in the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center. The highlight of the Day of Innovation was a special technology panel entitled “Mobile Broadband for Government: The Next Wireless Frontier,” which helped raise awareness and educate commercial and government enterprises about emerging wireless communications technologies for government applications.
Gov. Tom Ridge, first Secretary of Homeland Security and member of Powerwave’s Technical Advisory Board, opened the discussion with a keynote speech on the critical importance of mobile broadband as a competitive advantage for the United States as a nation, as well as for its national security.
“As broadband capabilities fuse with wireless technology, we will see the emergence of more efficient and effective government operations,” said Gov. Ridge. “Within government, wireless broadband can immediately improve the performance and capabilities of the public safety, defense and homeland security communities. Through its own use of broadband, government can better serve all citizens and strengthen our nation’s competitive advantage.”
The panel members shared their vision for mobile broadband:
• F. Whitten Peters, former Secretary of the United States Air Force, discussed the use of mobile broadband for the Air Force, the DoD focus on wireless and U.S. security needs. “We need to take a look at commercial technologies in DoD and harness these technologies for military purposes. Powerwave’s systems are great examples of the type of commercial technology that will be useful in the military. In particular, the cognitive radio systems with the active antenna in relationship to the filters, which offers an interesting alternative to existing tactical DoD systems.”
• John P. Jumper, General (retired), United States Air Force, talked about ubiquitous mobile broadband for military, theater needs, global security and airborne military networks. “This time could not be better for the DoD and other government agencies to start taking advantage of the great leverage provided by the commercial advances in mobile broadband. The advantages demonstrated by Powerwave in filtering and cancellation technologies, offers us new ways that are already in development and will enable a new round of capabilities.”
• A. Paulraj, Professor, Stanford University and Pioneer of Smart Antenna Technology MIMO, focused on groundbreaking antenna technologies, global developments and the wireless technology future. “While MIMO has become a relatively mature technology other than MIMO antennas, the next generation of wireless technology - 4.5 G or 5G is going to be all about interference management. I see Powerwave in the forefront of interference mitigation with their reconfigurable filters and active array antennas.”
• Ted Rappaport, Professor, University of Texas, Austin who founded the Wireless Networking and Communications Group (WNCG), and Pioneer of Indoor Wireless Propagation and Deployment Techniques discussed millimeter wave (60 GHz+) massively broadband communications, software-defined radio architectures and the FCC National Broadband Plan. "The FCC is about to come out with rules for prime real estate of spectrum around 700MHz has the ability to penetrate inside buildings more effectively than WiMax or 3G.” Powerwave has a very agile filter that is able to move around this spectrum and block interference. Powerwave should bring that technology into types of radios to use the spectrum more efficiently and, more importantly, to provide better service to the users.”
• Khurram Sheikh, Chief Product and Development Officer, Powerwave Technologies Inc., and Pioneer in the Development of "4G" Networks talked about mobile broadband standards, “Inside Out” networking—the future of mobile broadband, disruptive network solutions and the game changing technology roadmap. “The real beauty of LTE and mobile broadband is that its an IP based flat architecture. Powerwave believes in private secure mobile broadband networks. Powerwave’s products are software based solutions that you can remotely manage, control and communicate.”
“We believe that Powerwave’s leadership in meeting demand in the commercial wireless sector for infrastructure and solutions that provide quality coverage and capacity for commercial wireless applications enables us to offer significant resources and proven leadership to meet the growing need for mission-critical secured wireless networks for government, military, homeland security and public safety agencies,” stated Ronald J. Buschur, Powerwave’s president and chief executive officer. “We truly believe that Powerwave and its products and services are a great fit for these networks and that is the reason for the creation of our Government Business Solutions division.”
