Powerwave Expands Award-Winning Remote Radio Head Line with New Offerings to Support 700 MHz and 2.1 GHz Band LTE Networks

Delivering Reliability, Power Efficiency and Time-to-Market Advantages, Powerwave LTE Digital Remote Radio Heads Provide an Ideal Architecture for LTE Deployments

Powerwave Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:PWAV), a global leader in end-to-end wireless coverage and capacity solutions, today from International CTIA Wireless 2010, announced the expansion of the company’s award-winning remote radio head family to include two new products optimized for use in 700 MHz and 2.1 GHz bands – the two most dominant frequency bands in the U.S. being targeted near-term by major carriers for 3GPP Long Term Evolution (LTE) network deployments.

Featuring a small, lightweight form factor weighing less than 13kg, Powerwave’s LTE digital remote radio heads can be physically mated to base-band subassemblies to form tower-mounted macro base stations that support up to three LTE carriers, and can be tower or rooftop mounted.

The digital remote radio head is highly configurable via firmware, providing ease of customization and time-to-market advantage. The product supports two transmit and two receive channels (2x2 MIMO), with 40 watts per transmit branch. Power efficiency is delivered via Powerwave’s proprietary Digital Pre-Distortion (DPD) and Crest Factor Reduction (CFR), resulting in final stage efficiency of up to 46%. This efficiency translates into lower operational costs over the life of the network versus competing offerings. The products support CPRI and OBSAI standards, and are firmware upgradable to OBRI upon ratification by NGMN.

Offering superior flexibility and investment protection, Powerwave’s LTE digital remote radio head enables operators to support their current operations as well as future expansion to deliver new LTE services.

“The latest additions to Powerwave’s award-winning remote radio head family, these LTE digital remote radio heads offer operators reliability, power efficiency and an overall winning value proposition,” said Khurram P. Sheikh, chief product and development officer, Powerwave Technologies, Inc. “Our advanced platform enables the solution to be custom tailored to meet specific OEM and network operator requirements, offering significant speed to market advantages and reduced risk.”

Provides an Ideal Architecture for LTE Deployments
The build out of 4G LTE base stations using a distributed remote radio head approach allows the radio to be located alongside the antennas, eliminating energy/power losses associated with long cable runs by replacing them with optical fibre data interfaces. This architecture, in combination with Powerwave’s highly efficient digital-to-RF conversion and amplification, reduces CAPEX and OPEX of the overall system, as well as maintenance costs.

The unique design and higher power efficiency of Powerwave’s remote radio heads results in lower power consumption; use of a multi-carrier remote radio head also improves energy efficiency. All combined, the overall effect is less environmental impact via reduction in both the carbon and physical footprint of the base station. The remote radio heads can also be used in conjunction with Powerwave’s digital repeater family to support indoor 4G networks.

Powerwave has fielded more than 80,000 radio heads around the globe, supporting all manner of air interfaces and technologies. Built upon Powerwave’s industry-leading power amplifiers and filter solutions, Powerwave radio heads boast greater than 200,000 hours Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF).
