Powerwave Unveils Three-Sector, High-Power Outdoor Wireless Coverage And Capacity Booster

Designed for dense urban or rural areas, the booster system supports a reduction in key infrastructure components, and is ideal for “green” field integrations

CTIA Wireless 2008, Las Vegas, Booth #1000, April 01, 2008 - Powerwave Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:PWAV), a global source for end-to-end wireless infrastructure solutions, announced the expansion of its family of outdoor coverage and capacity systems, with the introduction of its three-sector, high-power booster system here today at CTIA Wireless 2008, the industry’s premier wireless conference and exhibition.

The new three-sector high power booster features an environmentally-friendly, energy efficient design, offering more compact footprint as opposed to competitive solutions by enabling operators to house equipment for three wireless sectors within a single micro-cabinet. Further space optimization is achieved through a reduction in the number of antennas, base stations (BTS) and feed lines required to provide 2G and 3G outdoor wireless coverage and capacity for dense urban cell cites and rural areas. The product is also designed to accommodate up to three MCPA modules, providing operators with the flexibility to support current and future coverage and capacity requirements.

When combined with Powerwave’s Clean Site™ Intellimast Antenna Platform, which maximizes tower space by integrating single- and multi-band antennas with high-performance tower-mounted amplifiers (TMAs) and remote electrical tilt (RET) under a single radome, the three-sector high-power booster offers network operators a “green” infrastructure solution.

Leveraging Powerwave’s best-in-class multi-carrier power amplifier (MCPA) technology, which offers industry-leading density, high efficiency and compatibility with multiple frequency bands, the three-sector high power booster can also help reduce in-network capital and operating expenditures, while increasing site efficiency.

“Powerwave is committed to providing our customers with next generation infrastructure solutions that provide the perfect balance between cost and performance,” said Ronald J. Buschur, President and Chief Executive Officer, Powerwave Technologies. “With an environmentally-friendly, energy efficient design that can be customized based on customer requirements, and is compatible with existing infrastructure build-outs, our three-sector, high power booster solution promotes the most efficient use of critical network infrastructure resources.”

Powerwave’s new three-sector high power booster leverages high-efficiency Feed Forward (FF) MCPAs to improve overall network performance, extend use of existing assets, and increase overall subscriber satisfaction. The three-sector high power booster utilizes modular sub-assemblies that simplify maintenance, maximize uptime and reduce time-to-market and operational costs. The three-sector booster also offers an electronic management interface that uses an Ethernet connection for remote system configuration and monitoring to simplify site management from the operator’s Network Operations Center (NOC).

Key benefits offered by Powerwave’s three-sector, high-power booster include:
  • Small mechanical footprint (40” H x 16” W x 38” D)
  • Highly configurable for one, two, and three sector applications. Clients can add sectors as the need arises.
  • Also supports uplink enhancement through TMA support and configurable integrated LNA.
  • Compatible with existing antenna and BTS equipment
  • First offering at PCS band with future releases to support the 900MHz, 1800MHz and 2100MHz frequency bands
  • Compatible with all prime power systems including +27VDC, 220VAC and -48 VDC supply voltages
  • IP55 rated enclosure for greater protection against dust and water intrusion

Powerwave’s outdoor coverage and capacity systems have been deployed worldwide to enhance base station and network performance. They are self-contained systems that can be quickly and easily deployed and re-deployed. Environments that can benefit from Powerwave’s systems include: campuses, convention centers, airports, subways, roadway tunnels, shopping centers, high-rise buildings, railway stations, rural areas, sports arenas, and dense urban zones.
