Powerwave Introduces Mobile RF Site Solutions, Rapid Mobile Deployment Unit, Delivering Real-Time Communications Support for Mission-Critical Operations

APCO 2009 – LAS VEGAS, August 17, 2009 - Powerwave Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:PWAV), a global source for end-to-end wireless infrastructure solutions, introduced its Rapid Mobile Deployment Unit (RMDU), a lightweight, compact mobile communications site that is quickly and easily deployable, providing cost-effective wireless capacity to support high concurrent call volume and data access wherever and whenever needed.

The announcement was made here today at the International Annual Conference and Expo of APCO, the Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO) International – the world’s oldest and largest professional organization dedicated to the enhancement of public safety communications.

Designed to enhance the mobile operations of public safety groups, wireless and data center operators, military contractors, and government agencies worldwide, the RMDU offers power, performance and flexibility to meet a wide range of requirements and operational scenarios. Use cases include: establishing a temporary wireless coverage system in an area devastated by natural disaster; supporting mission-critical communications for military deployments; supplementing existing access to wireless voice and data services during major events; and setting up a mobile data center for radio communications during incident management and command and control operations.

For wireless communications specifically, the RMDU is ideal for “grey area” coverage where wireless service can be spotty or non-existent, yet service providers must still comply with FCC mandates, including Enhanced 911 (E911).

Small yet Mighty RMDU Offers Extensive Features and Benefits

To be classified as “rapidly deployable,” mobile cell sites must meet specific criteria.  For example, components such as the tower, equipment shelter and generator systems must have the ability to be quickly disconnected and removed from the mobile trailer system, allowing for temporary-to-permanent pad mounting and vertical replenishment operations.  In addition, the complete system should be deployable in less than 30 minutes as a single-person operation. To address these requirements, Powerwave has developed an automated cable management system that feeds coax, fibre and power cables up and down the tower during telescoping and retraction operations, modular site components and vertical replenishment lifting points, eliminating the need for labor- and time- intensive deployment.

“The product is highly customizable and remarkably flexible to meet the needs of a wide range of applications, from disaster recovery and command center operations to military communications, including interior networks and ship-to-shore communications, oil rig platforms, large-scale event support, parking garage deployment applications and temporary UHF/VHF television broadcast,” said Khurram P. Sheikh, chief product and development officer for Powerwave Technologies, Inc.

“Powerwave has a distinct advantage in this market due to our industry leadership in the development of advanced RF site solutions as well as lightweight, customizable modular solutions that are easily transportable,” he said.

The RMDU combines Powerwave’s rugged VersaFlexTM 7.0 equipment shelter, or MicroFlex™ Outdoor Equipment Cabinet, with a hydraulic-powered telescoping tower. The RMDU is offered in a variety of configurations ranging from 3,500- to 22,500-pound GVWR-rated trailers.

The RMDU is rapidly deployable – up and running in less than 30 minutes – and is simple enough for only one person to erect. The tower is completely self-supporting, available in 20M to 50M heights, and is earth- or self-guy capable, eliminating structural and engineering issues, especially in urban environments. Designed for lower wind and aesthetic impact than competing lattice designs, the tower includes mechanical limit switches to prevent damage and over extension. Hydraulic operated towers eliminate the need for external cables and electric motors that are common points of failure. Additionally, in keeping with Powerwave's ongoing effort to design environmentally friendly products, the product leverages biodegradable hydraulic fluid designed to weather the most extreme operating environments (-70ºF to 175ºF). While accommodating a multitude of communication antennas, the tower also supports ancillary gear such as surveillance cameras and search lights # up to 600 pounds of payload.

The RMDU, configured with the VersaFlex 7.0 Equipment Shelter, offers class-leading equipment capacity, and all equipment and cabling is housed on sliding racks, providing ease of maintenance and flexibility to accommodate additional gear and new technologies going forward. The RMDU also comes standard with an integrated self-contained generator to meet power consumption and run-time needs, ensuring seamless operation and eliminating power availability concerns in even the most remote locations.

The RMDU is lightweight and easily transportable. Its low profile design yields a compact travel height and is equipped with a standard hitch. No commercial driver’s license is required; and standard half-ton to 1-ton pickups can be used for hauling # eliminating the need for special transportation permits.
